Entered army, 1876; Captain, 1887; Major, 1896; Bt Lt-Col 1896; Bt Col 1901; Lt-Col 1902; Col 1904; Brig.-Gen. 1904; Maj.-Gen. 1906; served Afghan War, 1879–80, including operations round Kabul, engagement at Charasieh (medal with clasp); Chitral Relief Force, in command Queen’s Own Corps of Guides, cavalry, 1895 (despatches, Brevet Lieut-Col, medal with clasp); North-West Frontier, 1897 (despatches, VC); operations Bajaur (despatches); commanded troops Rustam and Persai in Buner Expedition (despatches, CB, two clasps); Brig. Commander Commanding Derajat Brigade, 1906–09; commanded Corps of Guides, Mardan; retired, 1911. Decorated for rescue (with others) of Lieut Greaves under heavy fire, 17 Aug. 1897, Upper Swat
